EMFACE Functional
Do you experience a tight or tired jaw, clenching, stiffness or discomfort around the jaw muscles?
EMFACE Functional is a non-invasive, needle-free treatment designed for appropriate patients experiencing muscle-related jaw tension and TMJ-associated discomfort. The 20-minute treatment combines gentle muscle stimulation with controlled radiofrequency warming to support relaxation of overworked jaw muscles and more comfortable jaw movement.
EMFACE Functional TMJ treatment is available with Aesthetic Nurse Irina at Isle of Capri and Broadbeach on the Gold Coast.
What are TMJ and TMD?
The temporomandibular joint, commonly called the TMJ, connects the lower jaw to the skull. It allows the jaw to move while speaking, chewing, swallowing and yawning.
TMD, or temporomandibular disorder, is a broader term for conditions affecting the jaw joints, chewing muscles and surrounding structures.
Although “TMJ treatment” is the phrase most people use when searching online, TMJ-related symptoms can have different causes. Some are predominantly muscular, while others may involve the joint, teeth or surrounding tissues. An individual assessment is therefore important before treatment.
Common symptoms of TMJ-related jaw tension
- Symptoms differ between individuals and may include:
- Tight, tired or overworked jaw muscles
- Jaw clenching or grinding
- A tired or overworked feeling in the jaw muscles
- Reduced jaw movement or episodes of locking
- Jaw stiffness
- Painful clicking, popping or grating when opening or closing the mouth
- Discomfort spreading towards the face, temple, ear or neck
- Awareness of daytime clenching
- Waking with jaw tension or discomfort
- Reduced comfort when chewing, speaking or yawning
-
Painless clicking or popping is common and does not necessarily require treatment. However, persistent pain, locking, restricted movement or a change in your bite should be assessed by an appropriately qualified dental or medical practitioner.
What happens during the treatment?
Your first appointment begins with a clinical history and suitability assessment. Your symptoms, dental and medical history, previous treatments, dental work and any implanted devices or metal near the treatment area will be discussed.
The applicators are then positioned over the jaw-muscle area. During treatment, you will feel warmth and repeated rhythmic muscle activation. The intensity is gradually adjusted according to your comfort and clinical response.
No anaesthetic or needles are required. There is no planned downtime, and most patients return to their normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
How many treatments are recommended?
An initial course of four treatments is generally recommended, with sessions spaced between two and 14 days apart.
Some patients may notice changes in muscle tension or jaw comfort during the course, while others may experience a more gradual response. Results and the duration of any improvement vary between individuals.
Any future maintenance treatment should be based on reassessment and individual clinical needs.
Who may be suitable?
Following assessment, EMFACE Functional may be considered for adults experiencing:
- Muscle-related jaw tension
- Clenching-associated tightness
- Tired or overworked chewing muscles
- Jaw stiffness
- Reduced comfort with everyday jaw movement
- TMJ-associated discomfort where muscle tension may be a contributing factor
- A preference for a non-invasive, needle-free treatment
EMFACE Functional is not suitable for every person or every cause of jaw discomfort. Please disclose all medical conditions, dental work, implants and electronic or metal devices before treatment.
Other options for TMJ-related symptoms
There is no single approach that is suitable for everyone. Depending on the underlying cause, TMJ management may include:
- Jaw-care education and habit modification
- Dental assessment
- A professionally fitted oral appliance
- Physiotherapy, manual therapy or guided exercises
- Medical assessment and pain management
- Prescription treatment options following an individual consultation
- Specialist assessment for persistent locking, injury, bite changes or suspected joint disease
In selected cases, an appropriately qualified prescriber may consider prescription medicines designed to reduce excessive activity in the jaw muscles. These treatments are temporary, are not appropriate for everyone and require an individual medical assessment to discuss potential benefits, risks and alternatives.
EMFACE Functional may form one part of a broader management plan for appropriately selected muscle-related jaw tension.
- Frequently asked questions
-
Can EMFACE Functional help with jaw clenching?
The treatment is designed to address muscle tension and overactivity associated with clenching. It does not diagnose the cause of clenching, protect the teeth from grinding or replace a dental assessment.
Does the treatment hurt?
Most patients experience warmth and strong but controlled rhythmic muscle contractions. The treatment intensity is adjusted gradually according to your comfort.
Is there any downtime?
There is no planned recovery period. Most patients return to their normal activities immediately after treatment, although individual experiences may vary.
Can it be combined with other treatments?
Possibly. Suitability and treatment timing depend on your medical history, dental care and previous facial treatments. A combined or staged plan should only be recommended following an individual assessment. -
EMFACE Functional is not suitable for every person or every cause of jaw discomfort.
A complete screening is required. You should disclose all relevant medical conditions, dental work, implants and electronic or metal devices before treatment.
How does EMFACE Functional for TMJ work?
EMFACE Functional combines ultra-low-frequency HIFES muscle stimulation with synchronised radiofrequency energy.
Applicators are positioned over the jaw-muscle area while gentle, rhythmic stimulation works to relax overworked muscles involved in jaw movement, including the masseter and temporalis muscles.
At the same time, controlled radiofrequency energy warms the targeted tissues, supporting local circulation and further muscle relaxation.
Together, these technologies are designed to:
- Reduce muscle-related jaw tension
- Support relaxation of overworked jaw muscles
- Reduce stiffness
- Support more comfortable jaw movement
The treatment is completely non-invasive, requires no needles and takes approximately 20 minutes.
Are there any risks or side effects?
EMFACE Functional is non-invasive and is generally well tolerated. During treatment, you will feel warmth and controlled rhythmic activation of the jaw muscles.
Possible temporary effects may include:
- Redness or warmth in the treated area
- Mild skin sensitivity or irritation from the applicators
- Tingling or increased awareness of the treated muscles
- Temporary jaw-muscle fatigue, tightness or mild soreness, similar to the feeling after exercise
These effects are generally mild and temporary. More significant skin reactions, including blistering, crusting or burns, are uncommon but possible with radiofrequency-based treatment.
The treatment should never feel painfully hot. Please tell your practitioner immediately if you experience pain, excessive heat or unusual discomfort during the session.
Treatment is not suitable for everyone. A consultation and safety screening are required to review your medical and dental history, implanted electronic or metal devices, previous treatments and any other factors that could affect your suitability.
Individual experiences vary. Please contact the clinic if you experience an unexpected, severe or persistent reaction following treatment.
